School Bus Driver Improvement Instructor


 Course Description       

This course is designed for persons who express an interest in becoming an Instructor of the Ontario Safety League’s (OSL) “Ministry – Approved School Bus Driver Improvement Course”.  In this two day course, candidates will participate in a regular School Bus Driver Improvement Course (SBDIC) on day one followed by further review of legislative requirements, teaching techniques and strategies, course implementation and procedures and individual presentations on a topic related to school bus safety.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon succesful completion, participants will be able to:
  • Understanding HTA and O’Reg. specific to school buses
  • Understanding Operator and driver responsibilities under the legislation
  • Understanding how to perform propervehicle inspectionsas required under the legislation
  • Understanding the Hours of Service regulations
  • Understanding factors that would influence your ability to be a good defensive driver
  • Understanding vehicle dynamics
  • Understanding vehicle braking systems
  • Understanding the adjustments required for natural changes in nature
  • Understanding the adjustments required in the changes of weather
  • Understanding the adjustments required for traffic and road conditions
  • Understanding the need to be aware of blind spots and danger zones that are common to school buses
  • Understanding the ABC’s of a defensive driver
  • Understanding the prpoer procedures to follow regarding passengers
  • Understanding the safety equipment requirements
  • Understanding proper emergency procedures
  • Understanding of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
  • Understanding of proper procedures when running a course
  • Demonstrate the ability to prepare and deliver a lesson

Who ShouldAttend?      

Applicants requiring the ability to teach the OSL’s “Ministry Approved” SBDIC Course


  • Completed and have been certified by the Canada Safety Council in the PDIC and/or DDC Program – Note: Equivalent qualifications can be reviewed for exemption to the PDIC/DDC requirement
  • Applicant should not have more than 6 demerit points on licence
  • Applicant should have a “B” or “E” class licence and maintain their licence in good standing


Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an approved Ontario Safety League Instructor Certificate.

Course Dates:   2018:  Feb 8-9, Jun 21-22, Aug 23-24, Nov 1-2

Fee             $425.00 + applicable taxes

Note: The following fees will apply when implementing a course as an approved OSL Instructor

                                                $12:00 for SBDIC participant workbooks

                                                $9.75 per certificate for processing
