Driver Improvement Instructor (DDC/PDIC/55 Alive) – 22 – 11 – 14

Driver Improvement Training Programs is an ideal mechanism for delivering cost-efficient training to experienced drivers. The Ontario Safety League (OSL) provides a full range of services relating to these programs:
- Initial and recurrence instructor training;
- Sales of instructor and student materials; and
- Maintenance of an OSL database for the purposes of recording instructor and student history.
Course Description
This five-day course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to teach defensive driving to road users. As an Instructor, one has the opportunity to assist drivers by increasing their awareness of safe and defensive driving practices. Successful candidates will be qualified to deliver the following programs:
- Canada Safety Council (CSC);
- Coaching the Experienced Driver (CED) Programs;
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to build a lesson plan;
- Present and demonstrate a lesson to a class;
- Instruct using the materials provided within the course.
Format
Classroom with demonstration of course presentation for CSC programs, workshop instruction and interactive discussion and practical exercises.

CSC Instructor Manual & student workbook.
Reference: Driver Handbook, Highway Traffic Act, CED Instructor Manual sample.
Evaluation
Attendance, participation, lesson plans, presentation skills and written tests.
Certification
CSC Instructor Development Certificate for program(s) of choice.
Prerequisites
Letter supporting the following:
- Minimum five (5) years of continuous licensed driving experience;
- Current driver’s abstract – no more than six points for moving violations, no Criminal Code of
- Canada convictions related to the operation of a motor vehicle;
- Driving experience and holding a valid license in the class of vehicle for which you plan to instruct drivers is strongly recommended.
Duration
5 days: Classroom and homework will be assigned.

For each of the following courses, instructor kits include an instructor’s manual and visuals or teaching aids required to present the course. Student kits, sold separately by the Ontario Safety League, include a student’s manual and wallet-sized card certifying the candidate’s participation. A blank attendance record sheet is supplied providing instructors with a method of reporting their students to OSL for entry to our database.
