School Bus Driver Improvement Instructor


Course Description

This course is designed for persons who express an interest in becoming an Instructor of the Ontario Safety League’s (OSL) Ministry – Approved School Bus Driver Improvement Course. In this two day course, candidates will participate in a regular School Bus Driver Improvement Course (SBDIC) on day one, followed by further review of legislative requirements and teaching techniques, strategies, course implementation and procedures. Individual presentations on a topic related to school bus safety is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understanding of HTA and O’Reg. specific to school buses
  • Understanding of Operator and driver responsibilities under the legislation
  • Understanding of how to perform proper vehicle inspections as required under the legislation
  • Understanding of the Hours of Service regulations
  • Understanding of factors that would influence your ability to be a good defensive driver
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics
  • Understanding of vehicle braking systems
  • Understanding of the adjustments required for natural changes in nature
  • Understanding of the adjustments required in the changes of weather
  • Understanding of the adjustments required for traffic and road conditions
  • Understanding of the need to be aware of blind spots and danger zones, that are common to school buses
  • Understanding of the ABCs of a defensive driver
  • Understanding of the proper procedures to follow regarding passengers
  • Understanding of the safety equipment requirements
  • Understanding of the proper emergency procedures
  • Understanding of the appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
  • Understanding of proper procedures when teaching a course
  • Demonstrate the ability to prepare and deliver a lesson

Who Should Attend?

Applicants requiring the ability to teach the OSL’s Ministry Approved SBDIC Course


  • Completed and have been certified by the Canada Safety Council in the PDIC and/or DDC Program – Note: Equivalent qualifications can be reviewed for exemption to the PDIC/DDC requirement
  • Applicant should not have more than 6 demerit points on licence
  • Applicant should have a B or E class licence and maintain their licence in good standing


Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an approved Ontario Safety League Instructor Certificate.

Duration: Two (2) days; 9:00 am  to 4:00 pm

Course Dates: 2020: Feb 19-20, Jun 18-19, Aug 19-20, Oct 28-29

Fee $495.00 + applicable taxes
